In December 2009, the zoo was purchased and rescued by a team of zoological professionals from Virginia Safari Park of Natural Bridge, Virginia. On August 20, 2009, county officials announced that the closure of the zoo would be permanent. It closed temporarily on August 17, 2009, awaiting the decisions from the governments of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties to provide $125,000 each in funding. In 20, hurricanes Ivan and Dennis struck the area with devastating effect to the Zoo. In 2004, unable to make a profit, the founders handed over ownership to the nonprofit Gulf Coast Zoological Society. The zoo began with about 60 animals on 19 acres of land. Pat Quinn, one of the founders, became its first director. It was established in its current location in 1984 by four local businessmen. The zoo started on an acre of land on Burgess Road and later on a larger tract in Cantonment, Florida. The Gulf Breeze Zoo supports captive breeding, wildlife conservation, and habitat preservation programs. Activities include hand-feeding of some animals including giraffes. It has over 900 exotic animals including rhinos, hippos, Western lowland gorillas, and orangutans that visitors can view during an African preserve train ride. The Gulf Breeze Zoo (originally The Zoo Northwest Florida) is a 50-acre (20 ha) zoo located in Woodlawn Beach, Florida, neighboring Navarre and Gulf Breeze, Florida. Start dates may be flexible depending on your availability. We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2022 internships.

  • Interns must also maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Participants must be able to adjust to changes in their daily routines.
  • Interns are required to work as a team and with minimal supervision.
  • Weekend and holiday work may be required.
  • Interns must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • They must be physically able to perform cleaning, feeding and general husbandry tasks for animals in various weather conditions.
  • They should follow instructions and carry out their responsibilities in a safe and careful manner in order to avoid injury to themselves, to employees, to visitors, and to the animals.
  • Interns must take directions well and pay careful attention to procedures and established protocols.
  • All interns should have a basic interest in animals, an ability to get along with others, and a professional/neat demeanor.
  • *The duration of the program will vary depending on the number of hours per week that you volunteer and the schedule must be consistent over the 3-month period.
  • Interns must complete a minimum of 16 hours weekly, ideally 24 hours (3 days a week) of service weekly for a period of 3 months.
  • Preference is given to candidates that are pursuing a degree in a zoological related field.
  • A high school diploma or GED certificate is required.
  • Please note: All internships are unpaid and housing is the responsibility of the individual. Interns will have the opportunity to do an enrichment-based project to increase their knowledge of one of the species that they work with. Some of the areas interns will get instruction in include but are not limited to, cleaning, feeding, making diets, basic maintenance of areas, safety, and record-keeping, as well as the basics of Operant Conditioning Animal Training and enrichment. You will be given the opportunity to gain valuable skills, on-the-job training, and experience that will be a great asset to you in the future as you continue to pursue your career.
